"Our Banner In The Sky" by Frederic Edwin Church, painted circa 1861, is a striking and patriotic piece of art. Last week I got the book on Amazon and read it again. Now I'm all hyped about going over there again and experiencing the most beautiful mountain in the world. I'm almost 80, so that ain't gonna happen. One of my first reads back in the mid-fifties.
I took the cable car up to the ski lodge then hikedup as far as I dared, wearing penny loafer shoes. Later I saw the movie "Third Man on the Mountain" and now I own the DVD.
Maybe I'll just read Banner in the Sky a few more times and watch the DVD as well. Met a lady there wlho was going to climb the mountain the following day and her guide Vic Andermatt. Was so enthralled by the story that I went to see the Matterhorn near Zermatt, Switzerland in 1962.
In 2005 I met a man at the airport in Anchorage whose name was Andermatt. He was from Zermatt and I asked him if he'd known the guide - "He's my Uncle".
